A quick price check on the internet and possibly
local printers will reveal a wide range. Does it mean that the most
expensive giclee printing companies offer the best products? Not
necessarily! Although I know of a few very good printmakers who
charge a pretty penny for their services, they are not the only ones
with great skills. On the other hand I have seen very poor results
from other high priced outfits.
Many factors play
into how much you will be paying for the same giclee: if you are in
big markets such as Los Angeles or New York, expect to disburse much
more than you would in Arizona. Operating costs and the prevailing
local going rates account for the differences. This means that if
you are ordering prints remotely, you should probably avoid going to
the most expensive locations. It is also true on the other hand that
such large markets have a good pool of skilled operators. Nowadays
many people such as me have moved from the high pressure of the city
to more relaxed surroundings We still produce the best quality work,
but with much lower operating overhead.
The only word
of advice I can give is to try a small job and compare results. You
will be surprised at the wide differences among different companies.
See what the set up fees are as well. Some studios will not even
consider making prints without hefty start up charges. The logic
behind this is that they want to attract serious high paying artists
and weed out small time customers.
Other companies have small or
no set up fees and produce the same quality. They understand that
some jobs may not be profitable but want to give anyone the chance
to try their prints and possibly establish a long time relationship.
